I thought your description of a typical auction was actually apt, because if I understood correctly the entire auction process seems to take place within Google itself, as a closed loop, with Google accepting internal "bids" only, thus competing only with itself. Due to various external factors which you've described in previous posts, default settings, etc., it seems their rivals can hardly break into the "loop."
